#RefugeeWeek2019 – Tales of Hope & Inspiration, Day Five

Friends Not Foes

Friends Not Foes is a partner of Refugee Action – Colchester, and what we call our ‘mini-me’ organisation. We couldn’t do what we do without this wonderful group of young volunteers!

The group meets twice a week at The Sixth Form College, Colchester, and offers help to refugees from local schools with their homework and their English skills. They also organise events and fundraisers, and they are involved with our community in many ways.

Kaylee had never met a refugee until she became involved with Friends Not Foes after participating in the Model United Nations at college. She had an interest in politics and the refugee crisis, but being able to meet some of the local refugees and hear their stories has been incredibly inspiring for her. She’s keen to raise awareness of the crisis and to learn more about life and culture in the Middle East – so much so, that it has influenced her degree choice. Kaylee is going to do Middle Eastern Studies at Exeter University, who were so impressed with her involvement in Friends Not Foes that they made her a good offer. She will also study Arabic so she can communicate further with many members of the refugee community in their native language.

Kaylee is inspired by the hope and the positivity of the people she meets, people who have been through so much. She says that being part of this community is great fun – she loves playing football with the younger kids, and she also babysits for some of the families that don’t have their support network around them.

To Kaylee, Floran, Alison and the rest of the gang at Friends Not Foes, we’d like to say ‘shukran’ for all your support! We encourage anyone who’d like to get involved to send them a message.

Please share this post to celebrate this amazing group of young people.
