After a couple of thwarted attempts to meet up due to terrible weather at the start of the season, I am happy to report that the Refugee Action allotment is now in action. It is in a beautiful position on the East Bay site with well established fruit bushes, and two of our families are going to share the work (and the produce) on it together. Already the men folk, two husbands and two willing boys have put in several hours of work preparing the beds and planting potatoes, courgettes and strawberries. I’m sure other members of the families will be along to join in soon.
Perrywood Nursery has kindly offered to donate some plants and seeds and we are hoping to receive some funding from Community 360. Wayne Setford, from the Big Garden, a thriving community garden in Highwoods has been to visit and is going to offer some horticultural guidance, should any be needed.
We are open to visits from interested people and if any other families would like to follow suit, there’s no reason why we can’t apply for another plot for next year.
